âImpossible!â he snarled. His eyes were narrowed, which was never a good sign.
âPlease, Master.â Tears welled in her eyes. âHeâs a trove, Iâm certain of it.â
âAnd how would you know? You are too young to know a real trove when you see one.â
Through sobs of panic, she described his reactions to her letting, even as Vane turned his back on her. Burns smirked as she pleaded, her trembling hands writhing.
âYou know him so intimately, when I commanded you to remain afar?â
âI tried, Master. Truly, I did. But the lure of his form overwhelmed me. I could not help it.â
âThen you have failed, and disobeyed me.â
âPlease, let me explain. I know what he is, in my heart, with my entire being.â She sank to her knees, tears streaming from her eyes. If Vane was to reject her plea, her heart would shrivel to nothing. Paul had become everything to her. He was larger than anything in her lifeâexcept perhaps Vane, her master.
âYou would consider him above me?â Vane growled. Too late, she realized he had sensed her thoughts. She looked up to see his black eyes glaring at her.
âNo! Never! Such a thing would be impossible. You know this.â And yet, sheâd considered the idea of abandoning Vane to remain with Paul.
âI would destroy you with no more effort than a single thought.â Vane curled his hand into a wicked fist. Blood trickled from his palm and hissed on the varnished floor.
âI know, I know!â Estelle wailed. âI would never dream of leaving you.â
âAnd yet the thought crossed your mind.â He straightened and spun away, crossing over to Burns. âIf she ever leaves this ship without my authority, you are to crush her, understood? And then you are to dismember Paul Siddig, as painfully as possible.â
âMaster, please!â Estelle sobbed.
Vane turned to look at her as she trembled on her knees. âHe is so dear to you?â
âThis is not infatuation, Master.â
âIt bears all the signs.â
âPlease⦠please. He⦠he relishes the letting. And he⦠thrills to the exchange!â
Vane frowned. âHe responds to our fluids?â
âIn such a way that would amaze you!â
âHow so?â Vane demanded. âElaborate!â
âHe becomes a powerhouse. His strength doublesâtriples.â
âYour mortal gains strength?â
âAnd speed. He becomes a warrior⦠for a short time.â
Burns frowned. âSuch a response is rare.â
âHmm,â Vane concurred. âEnervation and compliance are more common reactions.â
âNot so with Paul,â Estelle insisted. The conversation had turned a corner.
âI would tempted to observe this,â Vane murmured, stroking his chin.
âAs would I.â Burnsâ glare was a warning. Do not attempt to deceive us.
âThen you should bring him to us, demonstrate this talent before me. If he performs to my satisfactionââ
âThank you, Master!â
âIf he pleases me, then I shall consider your request. Now, bring him. I wish to confer with Burns.â Abruptly, Vane turned his back on her. âBe sure to clean up your face before you return. Your tears have spoiled your look.â
âYes, Master.â
